Taken into account is the concept of kaitiakitanga, the customary Maori principles of trusteeship and resource management, expanded to include sustainable development as well. The Auckland Museum manages its cultural 'resources' (people and objects) according to kaitiakitanga principles, as a matter of good practice, social inclusion, and adherence to responsibilities to Maori groups outlined in the Treaty of Waitangi (1840). Also discussed is policy development, recognition of Maori interests, and dilemmas regarding the implementation of governance policies.
