545 |a William Gell was born at Hopton in Derbyshire in 1777. He lost his father in 1795 and his mother married Thoas Blore, who was a distinguished topographer. Gell's interests and kills as draughtsman and antiquarian must have been developed in his teens in assisting Thomas Blore. Gell went up to Cambridge, graduating in 1798. He was resident in Italy, in Rome and Naples, until his death in Naples in 1836.
